Practical guide

How to clip on your phone

You don't need a laptop, a paid editor or a studio. Every step below happens on a phone, with free apps, and takes about twenty minutes once you've done it a few times.

Get the source material

Campaigns give you the source: a link to a stream VOD, a video file, a song, a podcast episode. Download or save it the way the campaign page tells you to. Never re-use content from a campaign you haven't joined.

Find the moment

Scrub through at speed and mark anything that makes you react. You're looking for a self-contained moment: a punchline, a reveal, a strong claim, a reaction. If it needs five seconds of setup to make sense, it's usually the wrong moment.

  • Aim for 15–45 seconds
  • It must make sense with no prior context
  • Cut before the energy drops

Cut, frame and caption

Crop to vertical 9:16 with the subject's face in the upper third. Trim the dead air at both ends. Add captions — most people watch without sound, and captions measurably increase watch-through. Free phone editors handle all of this.

  • 9:16 vertical, face in the upper third
  • Trim silence at the start — the first second decides it
  • Burn in captions
  • Keep the campaign's required tags, handles or watermark

Write the hook and post

The on-screen text in the first frame does more work than the caption. State the payoff or the tension, not a description. Then post to your own account, and submit the link on the campaign page so the views can be verified.

Check the rules before you post

Every campaign lists what must be included and what isn't allowed — required hashtags, banned edits, platform restrictions. A clip that breaks them doesn't get paid, so read them once properly before you start cutting.

Questions people ask

What app should I use?

Any free phone editor that does vertical crop, trim and captions works. There's no required software.

How long should a clip be?

Usually 15 to 45 seconds. Shorter tends to hold attention better unless the moment needs the time.

Do I need to add captions?

They're strongly recommended — most short-form viewing happens muted — and some campaigns require them.

Where do I submit the clip?

On the campaign page, once it's posted live on your own account.
